Windlass not working, Impeller in backward, Mosquitos and Dengue fever present, and a Block Party!

Another hot night but this one was filled with reggae Christmas music from a pub down the street. I had to stay under the sheet all night because every time I came out, mosquitos were trying to feast on whatever parts stuck out from the sheet. When I got up this morning the Beef Jerky was gone. That means it’s time for the mouse traps tonight.

After a quick coffee I spent the morning and early afternoon scraping the hull free of barnacles and loose paint to prep it for bottom paint. Luperon left a lot of growth on the bottom that evidently didn’t get hosed off completely when we hauled the boat this spring.

Wayne spent the morning trying to figure out what was wrong with the windlass and then the rest of the afternoon working on getting the impeller off the engine. It looks like the impeller is still intact but may have been put in with the blade rotation in the wrong direction? I’m not sure if that would have been our problem or not. I know the engine wouldn’t have cooled correctly but for it to cut off continuously and bog down… I don’t know. Not sure why but I was hoping to see a broken impeller then I’d have felt like we found the problem. It’s been a hot sweaty, dirty work day and I’m in dire need of a shower tonight. I’m itchy all over from dirt, sweat and mosquito and no-see-um bites. Forgot to mention there’s Dengue fever in the area from mosquitos… Yay… I’m reminding myself that this is going to be a fun year! Yep! Believe it or not, I am grinning…

I went to see how Mary was faring then we both walked over to the store. I needed to pick up some ham, cheese, crackers, celery and onion and to see if they had any mouse traps. Not a one… hmmm. Rodent problems at home and now rodent problems here… A Rastafarian type fella that I’d said hi to in the boatyard this morning was in the store. I didn’t see him until he took my hand and started good daying me. Totally different than this morning when he just scowled at me. It was weird that he’d just walk up to me and take my hand while I’m shopping.

It looks like they have a Christmas parade in town tonight. We’ll see how it goes after a shower. Usually as the sun goes down – so do we. Bone tired tonight too.

Well went to a new deli (good sandwiches at reasonable prices) then came back and unburied the stickyboard trap that Mary gave us. I set one under the table and one on the table and put some of my sandwich on both. Looking back, I don’t think Wayne ever ate any of his. Hmmmm…. We went to the showers and Mary & Axel sat by the office trying to get the wifi to work then we headed over to the streetfair – Christmas in Spanish Town right outside the marina. There were venders set up along a block of road that was closed off to traffic and a stage/band setup across the road. The speakers that were blaring music were humongous and the kids and folks were dancing around. We walked to the end of the venders and the last stall had a couple of ladies that were making/selling smoothies. We got papaya, pineapple, coconut smoothies ($5@) that were very good then walked back through the ear shattering, body pounding music that made the heart stutter and ears hurt to the patio bar for beers (I nursed my smoothie). The music was still unbelievably loud. The bar didn’t need to play any and you could hear it I’m sure, for miles around. The fella I’d seen earlier in the yard and store wandered into the patio area with a beer and sat on the stone wall staring at me, then wandered off then back again with another beer and stared again. It was a little unnerving. He never approached our table though. Mary had pointed out that he’d had some kind devices on his wrists to cause pain to himself. I’d noticed some kind of bolted device and tabs on his wrist but didn’t want to keep looking because I didn’t want to seem interested in him. Wayne said he probably thought I was making a pass at him this morning when I said hello.
