A wonderful restaurant called Coco Mayas

Monday, December 10, 2012

It’s another work day in the boatyard. Got up at 7am and worked on touching up the bottom of the hull with bottom paint before the day got to hot, Then fixed the straps to the bimini, hooked up the Chart Plotter and Radar. Wayne worked on the dinghy and desooting the back of the boat.
Mary & Axel got launched today and are now happily sitting in the water at the dock. After we finished working on the boat for the day and took our showers we headed over to their boat for sundowners and ended up on another boat that was owned by a couple from Wisconsin – Tom and Megs. Don’t remember their boat name but loved chatting with them. While chatting, the girl from Coco Maya’s came down the dock and once again she asked if we had been there yet. I told her no but we were heading there tonite.
It was about a 10 minute walk from the boatyard and an incredibly beautiful place. All open air, furniture placed in the sand along the beach from loungers, to couches with tables, intricate details all about. They had a gas fire pit and oil lamps in the sand as you walked from the bar area towards the beach. One section of the Restauran had large boulders that became more numerous once on the beach, that reminded me of the lion kopjes  in Africa. I’d say the restaurant sits at the beginning of the Baths on Virgin Gorda – a huge pattern of boulders that sit on the edge of the island in the water. The ambiance at the restaurant is tops, the staff very friendly and helpful and the food (a Latin/Asian fusion) and prices (on the tapas) wonderful!!! The ribs were then best I’ve ever had – a honey, lime, chili concoction that left me wanting more. We’d tried a dish of Hoisin duck nachos, fish tacos, crab sushi rolls and curry shrimp tapas. Nobody left anything on the plates.
The walk back to the boatyard found us at the tail end of the Christmas parade. Some of the cars – I couldn’t believe my eyes. They were all decorated in lights and it was amazing that you could see out of the windows to drive. It was like a boat parade but with cars all lit up in Christmas themes driving down the road.
I can’t believe the difference in temperature in the boatyard verses elsewhere. It felt wonderfully cooler on the dock, the other boat, on the street and in the restaurant than in our boat… I need to find the mosquito repellent before undressing for bed even though I’m beginning to think it attracts them more…
