Thursday, December 17, 2009 Fernandina to Ft George Island

Fernandina Beach, Fl (N30 40.562/W081 28.188) To Ft George Island (N30 26.399/W81 26.294)

NE10 this morning my butt. The wind generator howled all night. We went to leave this morning and the anchor was thoroughly set. We really didn’t need the secondary anchor – it came up like a charm. The primary anchor was hooked extremely well. It took us almost an hour of wrangling and dancing around on the hook before it finally came free. We started to haul up the anchor at 10:00am and didn’t succeed in freeing ourselves until 10:50am. We both thought we’d snagged something that wouldn’t come up, but… it was just solid clay/mud! At one time, even over the dinghy on the deck, I could see the horizon at the bow while standing at the helm. The chain was really tugging the bow (front end) of the boat down with each turn of the windlass (the motor driven anchor lift).  Somehow the pelicans knew to stay out of our way this morning.
Luckily we didn’t have far to go today. Leaving Fernandina, I spotted Mad Cap in her berth at the marina. She was snug as a bug in a rug. We pulled into the Ft George River around 2:20pm to anchor in front of the Kingsley Plantation in 12-13 ft of water and traveled a total of 17.6 miles today. There were 6-7 fishermen (okay 2 women included) on shore and we swung pretty close to the shore. The river channel is pretty narrow where we need to stay in the deeper water. I watched the fishermen fishing for a while. The older oriental woman was the only one really catching anything and it seemed most was not to her liking since she kept throwing them back in.

While making my pork pie for dinner, we swung to close to shore (at low tide). Dinner prep interrupted to fly up to the helm and put Kolibrie in gear and put out a second anchor to keep us off shore. I’m sure the fishermen appreciated it. I yelled over “Good afternoon! We’re your entertainment for the evening!” I don’t think they got the joke – they just stared at me. But I’m sure we looked entertaining hauling an anchor to the back of the boat; tangling it in the life lines, then hauling it back to the front of the boat again and going forward and back to try and set it into a Bahamian Mooring. Back to the pork pie prep and I was able to turn off the wind generator tonight for some peace and quiet! I think we generated enough electricity today to get us through the night!
