Mile Hammock Bay NC (N34*33.177 W77*19.520)
Wow! What a night! The winds came roaring in around 11:30pm and kept up all night long. I kept getting up periodically to make sure that we were okay and the other boats weren’t moving into us. The wind generator sounded like it was roaring all night as it kept spinning and generating electricity for us.
There’s still a gale watch (as well as a freeze warning out for tonight) and the winds are still at 25-30 and gusting higher. I miss my wind instrument that tells me the speed and direction of the wind. The boat keeps tugging at her chain but keeps holding. We decided to stay put today. We don’t feel like getting to a bridge only to be told that if the winds hit 35 they won’t open. The winds should be calming down throughout the day and since there’s no way we’re going to get to the Ben Sawyer Bridge before Dec. 1st there’s no rush. The Ben Sawyer Swing Bridge is closing from December 1st until the 12th. They’re replacing the swing span to it so we’ll either have to wait on this side of the bridge or go outside and around in order to get to Charleston South Carolina.
I made some oatmeal for breakfast – we really needed something warm. Then I tore through the cupboards looking for dream whip (or it’s counterpart) that I bought at Shipshewana when I went with Mary and Elaine this summer. I finally found it and used a hand beater to whip it up. I was hoping that it was worth it because my hand was getting sore trying to get it to whip LOL. It worked though so we had pumpkin pie for lunch with whipped topping – much better than last nights without it :) Yay!
The two powerboats vacated the anchorage along with one of the sailboats and it’s the two boats from Michigan left. Turkey for dinner again :) I hope the winds calm tonight. It’s no fun wondering if you’re dragging through the night or if the boat next to you is dragging…
